Line Analysis

"Well dear, Life is a casting off. It's always that way."

This quote is from the play Death of a Salesman where Willy is complaining again about his life while Linda is there supporting him. This line is meant to be used as a metaphor and the key phrase here is "casting off." After jotting down this line in my Cornell notes I searched up what this phrase meant and I found out that it is a knitting term used to describe the casting off all the stitches in a row of fabric. Each obstacle, each frustration, and each sad event that Linda faces is like a row in knitting, once you finish it you can cast it off and continue towards the next line. Whenever Willy yells at her she will still always try to support him no matter what, just like when she tried fixing the stocking- casting it off. Whenever there is a problem, like a tow of cloth that needs to be knitted, she always tries to find a way to fix it, the same as casting off a row in knitting. This line stood out to me because of how underappreciated I feel Linda is to Willy. Most wives would have probably been fed up with all of Willy's outbursts and irrational statements yet she is still there to support him no matter what. This is very inspirational because no matter what hardships she may face she will always try to solve the issue and move on to the next thing in her life.
