Never Ending Nuclear Power

Image result for nuclear weaponsThe first nuclear bomb (also known as the atomic bomb) was created on July 16, 1945, by Robert Oppenheimer. Atomic bombs have been used twice in war by the United States, specifically World War II. One was fired at a city called Hiroshima, and the other was fired at Nagasaki, both cities inside of Japan. Till now there are about 9 countries that have access to nuclear weapons and this number will keep increasing as time goes on. Though while the use of nuclear weapons by the United States was definitely very effective in ending World War II, they still have lots of risks and unintended effects that we must look out for. For example, if a nuclear bomb was released onto a city today it would "immediately kill tens of thousands of people" (ICRC) and tens of thousands more "would suffer horrific injuries and later die from radiation exposure" (ICRC). There has been no weapon that has ever been as destructive or as terrifying as the atomic bomb in the history of mankind. In addition to the losses of human life that could happen if these weapons were used irresponsibly, they could severely "disrupt the Earth's ecosystem" (ICRC) and "reduce global temperatures, resulting in food shortages around the world" (ICRC). If we do not use these weapons responsibly or stably, then there could be lots of chaos in our near future. We have seen the effects of the nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, just imagine the disastrous effects that could happen to many innocent lives today.

  1. Are you relating this to Raymo's piece, "A Measure of Restraint"?
